At the council's direction, Chico PD has served notice to campers at several sites that they must leave within 72 hours or be cited. (1/8/21)
While most of us agree that the park is not the right location for unmanaged camping, evicting people while Chico does not have ONE SINGLE LEGAL CAMP SITE, nor ONE SINGLE SHELTER accepting new clients is morally indefensible.
We remain in the midst of a pandemic, and moving people from existing camp sites flies in the face of CDC recommendations and presents a danger to our entire community:
"Considerations for encampments: If individual housing options are not available, allow people who are living unsheltered or in encampments to remain where they are. Clearing encampments can cause people to disperse throughout the community and break connections with service providers. This increases the potential for infectious disease spread." (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/homeless-shelters/unsheltered-homelessness.html)
We have already had two homeless deaths in the past month, and rain and freezing temperatures are ahead. Chico, do the right thing.
