The Chico City government must establish a legal campground with restrooms and a warming shelter. This is the least a decent community should do to protect the vulnerable.

Criminalizing camping in this situation, is criminalizing homelessness when the healthy response is to help people, connect them to housing and services. Chico City Council failing to follow CDC guidance on not breaking up encampments is a danger to everyone. I fully support this idea because it addresses the reality instead of being a slogan with the sole benefit of fitting on a campaign sign (e.g., Keep Chico Sweet/Safe).

Yes, evicting campers who have nowhere else to go, in the middle of winter, in the middle of a deadly pandemic, DOES MAKE YOU THE BAD GUY.

I am really disappointed in the Chico City Council and Chico PD for criminalizing homelessness. These are our fellow humans and community members and they need help. We need to provide a safe and permanent shelter with access to resources for the unhoused population.

These eviction notices fly in the face of logic, reason, and decency -- HOW CAN YOU EVICT PEOPLE WHO WERE ALLOWED TO BE THERE (due to CDC guidelines towards a law/policy/legal allowance by the council months ago) and with no support for alternative means of living situation, basically be asked to move their shelter and belongings to another place that is (probably?) also deemed illegal? How does this make any sense?

Where are these people supposed to go? Where will they go once evicted from the park? Into the neighborhoods? What alternatives do they have? City Council, please rethink this inhumane and destructive behavior and provide safe shelter, a campground, a place to be. These are our neighbors, Chico people.

Hire more social workers to accurately assess the needs of the individual homeless other than just housing. Finding creative and compassionate resources as a way to deal with this crisis on a long term basis.

Thank you to the new city council who have reversed the old city councils decision to allow camping in bidwell park for the first time in 100 years without providing alternatives for people to go. The old council had 2 years and did nothing. Time to hold the Don Taylor and the county responsible for alternative housing and transportation for these people to go home. This last council has created a homeless/lawless unaccountable safe haven for too long. It is long overdue to have our parks back

I have read these comments, and find most to be uninformed or incorrect on the law. Martin v. Boise requires only that sleeping not be banned citywide, in all places and all times. The case specifically states that nothing in the holding prevents cities from enforcing rules about constructing shelters on city park lands.

Furthermore, the city is not responsible for providing shelters, that has been the purview of the County, the State, and the numerous NPOs they fund. Millions of dollars has been spent in Butte County and millions more is on the way. The failure of these organizations to provide whatever they believe people need and are entitled to, is not the fault of the City Council, or the citizens being severely impacted by the degradation of our parks and waterways. So point that boney finger of blame at yourselves, and the responsible agencies, not innocent citizens and a city council only trying to do its job; protect and enhance the quality of life for all citizens. Shame on you for promoting the use of parks for camping in the first place. You have made the situation must worse. Own that.
